  • GMC Collisions As Triggers of Star Formation. VIII. The Core Mass Function

    摘要: Compression in giant molecular cloud (GMC) collisions is a promising mechanism to trigger formation of massive star clusters and OB associations. We simulate colliding and non-colliding magnetised GMCs and examine the properties of prestellar cores, selected from projected mass surface density maps, including after synthetic {\it ALMA} observations. We then examine core properties, including mass, size, density, velocity, velocity dispersion, temperature and magnetic field strength. After four Myr, $\sim1,000$ cores have formed in the GMC collision and the high-mass end of the core mass function (CMF) can be fit by a power law $dN/d{\rm{log}}M\propto{M}^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha\simeq0.7$, i.e., relatively top-heavy compared to a Salpeter mass function. Depending on how cores are identified, a break in the power law can appear around a few $\times10\:M_\odot$. The non-colliding GMCs form fewer cores with a CMF with $\alpha\simeq0.8$ to 1.2, i.e., closer to the Salpeter index. We compare the properties of these CMFs to those of several observed samples of cores. Considering other properties, cores formed from colliding clouds are typically warmer, have more disturbed internal kinematics and are more likely to be gravitational unbound, than cores formed from non-colliding GMCs. The dynamical state of the protocluster of cores formed in the GMC-GMC collision is intrinsically subvirial, but can appear to be supervirial if the total mass measurement is affected by observations that miss mass on large scales or at low densities.

  • First Detection of Radio Recombination Lines of Ions Heavier than Helium

    摘要: We report the first detection of radio recombination lines (RRLs) of ions heavier than helium. In a highly sensitive multi-band (12--50 GHz) line survey toward Orion KL with the TianMa 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT), we successfully detected more than fifteen unblended $\alpha$ lines of RRLs of singly ionized species (XII) recombined from XIII. The Ka-band (35--50 GHz) spectrum also shows tentative signals of $\beta$ lines of ions. The detected lines can be successfully crossmatched with the the rest frequencies of RRLs of CII and/or OII. This finding greatly expands the connotation of ion RRLs, since before this work only two blended lines (105$\alpha$ and 121$\alpha$) of HeII had been reported. Our detected lines can be fitted simultaneously under assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). An abundance of CIII and OIII of 8.8$\times$10$^{-4}$ is obtained, avoiding the complexities of optical/infrared observations and the blending of RRLs of atoms. It is consistent with but approaches the upper bound of the value (10$^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$) estimated from optical/infrared observations. The effects of dielectronic recombination may contribute to enhancing the level populations even at large $n$. We expect future observations using radio interferometers could break the degeneracy between C and O, and help to reveal the ionization structure and dynamical evolution of various ionized regions.

  • Disks and Outflows in the Intermediate-mass Star Forming Region NGC 2071 IR

    摘要: We present ALMA band 6/7 (1.3 mm/0.87 mm) and VLA Ka band (9 mm) observations toward NGC 2071 IR, an intermediate-mass star forming region. We characterize the continuum and associated molecular line emission towards the most luminous protostars, i.e., IRS1 and IRS3, on ~100 au (0. 2") scales. IRS1 is partly resolved in millimeter and centimeter continuum, which shows a potential disk. IRS3 has a well resolved disk appearance in millimeter continuum and is further resolved into a close binary system separated by ~40 au at 9 mm. Both sources exhibit clear velocity gradients across their disk major axes in multiple spectral lines including C18O, H2CO, SO, SO2, and complex organic molecules like CH3OH, 13CH3OH and CH3OCHO. We use an analytic method to fit the Keplerian rotation of the disks, and give constraints on physical parameters with a MCMC routine. The IRS3 binary system is estimated to have a total mass of 1.4-1.5$M_\odot$. IRS1 has a central mass of 3-5$M_\odot$ based on both kinematic modeling and its spectral energy distribution, assuming that it is dominated by a single protostar. For both IRS1 and IRS3, the inferred ejection directions from different tracers, including radio jet, water maser, molecular outflow, and H2 emission, are not always consistent, and for IRS1, these can be misaligned by ~50$^{\circ}$. IRS3 is better explained by a single precessing jet. A similar mechanism may be present in IRS1 as well but an unresolved multiple system in IRS1 is also possible.

    摘要: The forbidden dark matter cannot annihilate into heavier partner or SM particles by definition at the late stage of the cosmological evolution. We point out the possibility of reactivating the annihilation channel of forbidden dark matter around supermassive black holes. Being attracted towards black hole, the forbidden dark matter is significantly accelerated to overcome the annihilation threshold. The subsequent decay of the annihilation products to photon leaves unique signal around the black hole, which can serve as smoking gun of the forbidden dark matter.

  • Surveys of Clumps, Cores, and Condensations in the Cygnus X: II. Radio Properties of the Massive Dense Cores

    摘要: We have carried out a high-sensitivity and high-resolution radio continuum study towards a sample of 47 massive dense cores (MDCs) in the Cygnus X star-forming complex using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, aiming to detect and characterize the radio emission associated with star-forming activities down to ~0.01 pc scales. We have detected 64 radio sources within or closely around the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the MDCs, of which 37 are reported for the first time. The majority of the detected radio sources are associated with dust condensations embedded within the MDCs, and they are mostly weak and compact. We are able to build spectral energy distributions for 8 sources. Two of them indicate non-thermal emission and the other six indicate thermal free-free emission. We have determined that most of the radio sources are ionized jets or winds originating from massive young stellar objects, whereas only a few sources are likely to be ultra-compact HII regions. Further quantitative analyses indicate that the radio luminosity of the detected radio sources increases along the evolution path of the MDCs.

  • A Q-band line survey towards Orion KL using the Tianma radio telescope

    摘要: We have conducted a line survey towards Orion KL using the Q-band receiver of Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT), covering 34.8--50 GHz with a velocity resolution between 0.79 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.55 km s$^{-1}$ respectively. The observations reach a sensitivity on the level of 1-8 mK, proving that the TMRT is sensitive for conducting deep line surveys. In total, 597 Gaussian features are extracted. Among them, 177 radio recombination lines (RRLs) are identified, including 126, 40 and 11 RRLs of hydrogen, helium and carbon, with a maximum $\Delta n$ of 16, 7, and 3, respectively. The carbon RRLs are confirmed to originate from photodissociation regions with a $V_{\rm LSR}\sim$9 km s$^{-1}$. In addition, 371 molecular transitions of 53 molecular species are identified. Twenty-one molecular species of this survey were not firmly detected in the Q band by Rizzo et al. (2017), including species such as H$_2$CS, HCOOH, C$_2$H$_5$OH, H$_2^{13}$CO, H$_2$CCO, CH$_3$CHO, CH$_2$OCH$_2$, HCN $v_2=1$, and CH$_3$OCHO $v_t=1$. In particular, the vibrationally excited states of ethyl cyanide (C$_2$H$_5$CN $v$13/$v$21) are for the first time firmly detected in the Q band. NH$_3$ (15,15) and (16,16) are identified, and they are so far the highest transitions of the NH$_3$ inversion lines detected towards Orion KL. All the identified lines can be reproduced by a radiative transfer model.

  • Star Formation in a Strongly Magnetized Cloud

    摘要: We study star formation in the Center Ridge 1 (CR1) clump in the Vela C giant molecular cloud, selected as a high column density region that shows the lowest level of dust continuum polarization angle dispersion, likely indicating that the magnetic field is relatively strong. We observe the source with the ALMA 7m-array at 1.05~mm and 1.3~mm wavelengths, which enable measurements of dust temperature, core mass and astrochemical deuteration. A relatively modest number of eleven dense cores are identified via their dust continuum emission, with masses spanning from 0.17 to 6.7 Msun. Overall CR1 has a relatively low compact dense gas fraction compared with other typical clouds with similar column densities, which may be a result of the strong magnetic field and/or the very early evolutionary stage of this region. The deuteration ratios, Dfrac, of the cores, measured with N2H+(3-2) and N2D+(3-2) lines, span from 0.011 to 0.85, with the latter being one of the highest values yet detected. The level of deuteration appears to decrease with evolution from prestellar to protostellar phase. A linear filament, running approximately parallel with the large scale magnetic field orientation, is seen connecting the two most massive cores, each having CO bipolar outflows aligned orthogonally to the filament. The filament contains the most deuterated core, likely to be prestellar and located midway between the protostars. The observations permit measurement of the full deuteration structure of the filament along its length, which we present. We also discuss the kinematics and dynamics of this structure, as well as of the dense core population.

  • The Disk Population in a Distant Massive Protocluster

    摘要: The unprecedented angular resolution and sensitivity of ALMA makes it possible to unveil disk populations in distant ($>$2 kpc), embedded young cluster environments. We have conducted an observation towards the central region of the massive protocluster G286.21+0.16 at 1.3 mm. With a spatial resolution of 23 mas and a sensitivity of 15 $\rm \mu Jy~beam^{-1}$, we detect a total of 38 protostellar disks. These disks have dust masses ranging from about 53 to 1825 $M_\oplus$, assuming a dust temperature of 20 K. This sample is not closely associated with previously identified dense cores, as would be expected for disks around Class 0 protostars. Thus, we expect our sample, being flux limited, to be mainly composed of Class I/flat-spectrum source disks, since these are typically more massive than Class II disks. Furthermore, we find that the distributions of disk masses and radii are statistically indistinguishable with those of the Class I/flat-spectrum objects in the Orion molecular cloud, indicating similar processes are operating in G286.21+0.16 to regulate disk formation and evolution. The cluster center appears to host a massive protostellar system composed of three sources within 1200 au, including a potential binary with 600 au projected separation. Relative to this center, there is no evidence for widespread mass segregation in the disk population. We do find a tentative trend of increasing disk radius versus distance from the cluster center, which may point to the influence of dynamical interactions being stronger in the central regions.
